A Complete Guide for IIT JEE – JEE Main – JEE Advanced Exams

The Truth About JEE Exams Held in India

If you are an aspiring engineer who wants to study in one of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) or National Institutes of Technology (NITs), you must have heard of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). JEE is one of India’s largest and most competitive engineering entrance exams, with millions of students appearing for it every year. But what is the truth about JEE exams held in India? How are they conducted, what are the eligibility criteria, and what are the challenges and opportunities for the candidates? In this blog post, we will try to answer these questions and more.

What is JEE?

JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination, which is a two-stage exam for admission to undergraduate engineering programs in IITs, NITs, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). The first stage is JEE Main, which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) four times a year, usually in February, March, April, and May. The second stage is JEE Advanced, which is conducted by one of the IITs once a year, usually in June. Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates who qualify JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.

What are the eligibility criteria for JEE?

To be eligible for JEE Main, a candidate must have passed or appeared in the final examination of Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. The candidate must also have scored at least 75% marks in aggregate or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the minimum marks requirement is 65%. The candidate must also be born on or after October 1, 1998 (with five years relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates).

To be eligible for JEE Advanced, a candidate must have qualified JEE Main and be among the top 2.5 lakh candidates (including all categories) in JEE Main. The candidate must also satisfy the age limit, performance in Class 12 or equivalent, and number of attempts criteria as specified by the organizing IIT.

How are JEE exams conducted?

JEE Main is conducted online as a computer-based test (CBT) with multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical answer type (NAT) questions. The exam consists of three papers: Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech., Paper 2A for B.Arch., and Paper 2B for B.Planning. Each paper has three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics for Paper 1; Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test for Paper 2A; and Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Planning Based Questions for Paper 2B. Each paper is of three hours duration and has a maximum of 300 marks. There is negative marking for incorrect answers in MCQs.

JEE Advanced is also conducted online as a CBT with MCQs and NAT questions. The exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Each paper has three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each paper is of three hours duration and has a maximum of 198 marks. There is negative marking for incorrect answers in some questions.

What are the challenges and opportunities for JEE candidates?

JEE exams are known for their high level of difficulty and competition. According to official data1, out of 9.34 lakh candidates who registered for JEE Main 2023 February session, only 6.19 lakh appeared for the exam. Out of these, only 1.95 lakh candidates registered for JEE Advanced 20232. This shows that only a small fraction of JEE aspirants make it to the final stage of admission to IITs and NITs.

However, JEE exams also offer many opportunities for the candidates who prepare well and perform well. Apart from getting admission to some of the best engineering institutes in India and abroad3, JEE candidates also get exposure to various concepts and skills that are useful for their future careers. Moreover, JEE exams also help in developing critical thinking, problem-solving, time management, and stress management abilities among the candidates.

Conclusion

JEE exams are one of the most important milestones for engineering aspirants in India. They require rigorous preparation, dedication, and hard work from the candidates. However, they also reward them with many benefits and advantages that can shape their academic and professional lives. Therefore, if you are planning to appear for JEE exams held in India, you should know the truth about them and prepare accordingly.
