For Biden, Sunak, Erdogan, Union ministers get airport assignments as India rolls out G20 red carpet

India is gearing up to host the 17th G20 summit in New Delhi from September 17 to 19, 2023. The summit will bring together the leaders of the world's 20 major economies to discuss global issues such as climate change, health, trade, and development. India has invited several guest countries and international organizations to participate in the summit, including Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Vietnam, and the United Nations.

As the host country, India is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a smooth and successful summit. One of the aspects of the preparations is the protocol arrangements for the arrival and departure of the foreign dignitaries. According to a report by The Indian Express¹, India has assigned Union ministers and senior officials to receive and see off the leaders at the airports.

Here is a list of some of the prominent leaders and their airport assignments:

- US President Joe Biden: He will be received and seen off by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Road Ministry, General (retired) V K Singh. Biden is expected to arrive in India on September 16 and depart on September 19. He will be staying at the ITC Maurya hotel in New Delhi. This will be his first visit to India as the US president and his third G20 summit. He will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders on various issues of mutual interest.

- UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: He will be received and seen off by Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur. Sunak will arrive in India on September 16 and leave on September 18. He will be staying at The Oberoi hotel in New Delhi. This will be his first visit to India as the UK prime minister and his second G20 summit. He will meet Prime Minister Modi and other leaders to discuss ways to boost trade, investment, and cooperation between the two countries.

- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: He will be received and seen off by Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan. Erdogan will arrive in India on September 17 and depart on September 19. He will be staying at The Taj Mahal hotel in New Delhi. This will be his ninth visit to India and his tenth G20 summit. He will have bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Modi and other leaders to enhance ties and address regional and global challenges.

India is hoping that the G20 summit will provide an opportunity to showcase its leadership role in the world and its commitment to multilateralism. The summit's theme is "Towards an Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Recovery". The agenda includes topics such as pandemic response, economic recovery, climate action, digital transformation, gender equality, health security, and counter-terrorism. India will also host several side events such as a cultural program, a business forum, a civil society meeting, and a youth summit.

The G20 summit is expected to witness high-level participation from around 40 countries and organizations. Some of the notable guests include Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, World Bank President David Malpass, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.

India is confident that the G20 summit will be a success and will contribute to the global efforts to overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. India is also looking forward to strengthening its strategic partnerships with key countries and organizations through bilateral and multilateral engagements during the summit.
