Hirsh Vardhan Singh becomes third Indian-American to seek Republican ticket for 2024 Presidential election
Hirsh Vardhan Singh, a 38-year-old engineer and businessman from New Jersey, has announced his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election from the Republican Party. He is the third Indian-American to join the race, after former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and millionaire entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
Singh, who was born to Indian immigrant parents and speaks Hindi, has declared himself as a "lifelong Republican" and a strong proponent of the "America First" conservative ideology. He has also praised former President Donald Trump as "the greatest President of my lifetime" and said that "America needs more".
Singh has gained attention for referring to himself as the "only pureblood candidate" due to his refusal to receive the Covid-19 vaccinations, and has been described as “Trump on steroids” by some media outlets. He has also expressed his views on various issues such as immigration, education, health care, national security, and foreign policy.
Singh has previously run for several offices in New Jersey, including governor, senator, and congressman, but failed to secure the Republican nomination in any of them. He faces a crowded field of potential contenders for the 2024 presidential nomination, including Trump himself, who has hinted at running again.
Singh is part of a larger trend of the Indian-American community's rising political aspirations in the US. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also referenced this in his state visit to the US last month, mentioning the 'Samosa Caucus' in a speech to the joint sitting of the United States Congress. The term is sometimes used to refer to the informal grouping of Indian-origin Americans in Congress.
Singh's announcement comes as Republicans are scheduled to meet in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15 to 18, 2024, for their national convention to formally select their party's next presidential nominee. It remains to be seen how Singh will fare in the primaries and caucuses that will determine the delegates for the convention.
