UP teacher defends action against Muslim student, says 'I'm handicapped, so...'

A shocking video of a teacher in a private school in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation from various quarters. The video shows the teacher, identified as Tripta Tyagi, instructing her students to slap a Muslim boy one by one, while making derogatory remarks about his religion and community. The boy, who is seen crying and pleading in the video, was allegedly punished for not doing his homework.

The incident took place on Thursday, August 24, 2023, in Khubbapur village under the jurisdiction of Mansurpur police station. According to reports, the boy's father had removed him from the school and made an agreement with the school authorities that he would not file a police complaint and the school would refund his admission fees. However, after the video surfaced online, the police took suo motu cognizance and registered a case against the teacher under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The teacher, who was suspended by the school management, has defended her actions and claimed that there was a conspiracy behind the incident. She said that she was trying to discipline the boy as he had not memorised a lesson for months and that his uncle had asked her to do so. She also said that she was handicapped and could not hit him herself, so she made other students slap him. She denied any communal angle to the incident and said that she did not have anything against the boy or his community. She said that she had taught many Muslim students in her village and they would vouch for her.

The teacher's justification has not cut any ice with the public and the political parties, who have slammed her for spreading hatred and violence among innocent children. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the teacher was "sowing the poison of discrimination in the minds of innocent children" and "turning a holy place like a school into a market place of hatred". He also blamed the BJP for spreading "the same kerosene" that has set every corner of India on fire. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded that the teacher be sacked immediately and called her a "blot on teacher society". He also accused the BJP government of failing to protect the minorities and uphold the constitutional values.

The incident has also raised questions about the quality of education and the safety of children in schools, especially in rural areas. Many activists and experts have called for strict action against the teacher and the school authorities, as well as sensitisation and training programmes for teachers to prevent such incidents from happening again. They have also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children's progress and well-being in schools and report any cases of abuse or discrimination to the authorities.
